ABSTRACT A preliminary checklist is provided for the vascular plant flora of the communal area La Guásima located in the western foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental in southern Sinaloa,
northwestern Mexico. Vegetation in the area includes tropical deciduous forest, tropical subdeciduous forest, oak woodland, edaphic grassland, and riparian vegetation. A total of 785 species and infraspecific taxa of vascular plants, belonging to 434 genera and 105 families have beren recorded in this area since we started collecting in 2003. Our floristic inventories are part of the documentation of the biodiversity to support the establishment of La Guásima as a federal Protected Natural Area.
RESUMEN Se presenta un listado florístico preliminar de la flora vascular de la Comunidad La Guásima, localizada al pie de la Sierra Madre Occidental en el sur de Sinaloa, en el noroeste de México. Los tipos de vegetación presentes incluyen el bosque tropical caducifolio, bosque tropical subcaducifolio, bosque de Quercus, pastizal edáfico y vegetación riparia. Hemos registrado 785 especies y taxones infraespecíficos, en 434 géneros y 105 familias, desde que iniciamos nuestras recolectas en 2003. Este inventario florístico documenta la biodiversidad para apoyar la designación de La Guásima como un Área Natural Protegida federal.
