United States, California, "Mariposa" is Spanish word for butterfly. Flowers white/slightly purple, cup-shaped; petal 1/2 to 1 1/2" long with purple-black spot above basal gland; leaves basal, grasslike, 4 to 8" long, dying back early; single bloom to a stem. Found in Ackerman meadows;7,000'.

Characteristics of Genus Calochortus are: stem from bulb; lvs narrow, 1 or 2 at base, few on stem; sepals small, leaf-shaped, green or colored; petals large, showy, and broadly wedge-shaped, each w large glandular pit (often dark) near base and few or many hairs; 6 stamens.

C. venustus is a more beautiful species, velvety white w spot of brownish red, and having the dark spot BELOW the basal gland (or no spot)

United States, California, See description on NO. 539. This specimen found at an altitude of 8,200' in Tuolumne Meadows (the lower meadow). The grasslike basal leaves die back early. Another species C. Nuttalii grows in Utah and is called "sago lily." Other species are C. luteus, C. venustus, C. albus, C. monophyllus, and C. nudus.
