This must be reticulata, but flowers too small, and Dr. Small does not mention the very conspicuous red-brown strip of excrescences on inner face of the inner petals.

These flowers all not fully grown except, perhaps, the little brownish-white one that grew in very dry sand. All flowers, even fully grown ones, collected earlier and at this date and some even as late at Jan. 22, even were very much smaller than given in books and as collected later (see later collections).

Outer petals 2-2.5 cm long; inner petals 1.5-1.6 cm long; bases with red auricles & red line between them on inside; petals at first pale green, then whiter; inner petals connivent with pointed tips which almost quite touch. Both of these flowers were on leafless shoots of the preceeding year. From different plants a mile or so apart. The smaller flower is from the same plant as I got flowers from last year the latter part of January. (See Herbarium, Univ. of N.C.)

Low sandy woods with pines, etc. Flowers on leafless last year's twigs; sepals 5 mm long, broad at base, tips deep brown; body cream, very finely tomentose. Outer petals drooping, 2.2-2.5 cm long, elliptic, greenish to cream; inner petals connivent 1.5 cm long, broadlyovate, strongly auricled at base, with a purple strip at base on inner face; outer petals very munutely pubescent on outer face (almost invisibly so even under a hand lens. Leaves long obovate to subelliptic, very minutely tomentose below even when infolding; Young twigs tawny tomentose to nearly glabrous; This describes 4 plants with 1 flower each, scattered in low sandy woods by ---- St. within town limits western edge. This plant differs strongly from Pityothamnus reticulatus in Small in much smaller flowers in all parts and in much less strongly pubescent twigs & leaves.

Pine scrub, (P. caribaea), west of town and south of Drive-In Theater. Flowers on different plants not far apart varied greatly in size, e.q. outer from 2.5-4.4 cm long when fully grown. Largest inner petals 2.3 cm long. These are largest than any before seen, though they have been getting large during the past week. The red color of the inner petals near base inside may in some cases be diffused almost over the entire petal. (See notes of Jan. 12, 1948).
