United States, South Dakota, Roberts, Roberts County: Ortley Township T122N R52W Section 9 W2 NW4 SW4 SW4. A rich fen approximately 100 acres in size, is about 2 miles north/northwest of Ortley. the fen occurs in a large drainageway and is divided by a north/south gravel road. It is dominated by Carex spp. plus Salix bebbiana and Salix discolor (Salix occurs as scattered clumps to dense thickets). Much of the fen is a floating mat which in places is too thin to hold the weight of an adult. The soil is mapped as Rauville mucky silt loam (Ra), a calcareous Cumulic Haplaquoll. Teh soil is the fen is actually a muck, some type of medisprist. The fen is owned by members of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe (heirship trust land) and is on the Prairie Coteau. 50,000+ ramets are found in a sevral acre area on either side of the gravel raod. The population begins just east and west of the gravel road. Menyanthes trifoliata occurs on floating mats of vegetation and in places it is the dominant species. The corollas are white. Menyan
