Mosaic of degraded open areas (including dry roadsides and wet ditches), dry upland oak-pine forest, and slightly more mesic hardwood forest. Associates: Pinus virginiana, P. echinata, Quercus alba, Q. prinus, Q. velutina, Juniperus virginiana, Liriodendron, Nyssa sylvatica, Carya glabra, Sassafras, Robinia pseudoacacia, Acer rubrum, Cornus florida, Oxydendrum, Vaccinium stamineum, Kalmia latifolia, Rhus copallina, Smilax glauca, S. rotundifolia, Daucus carota, Chimaphila maculata, Hypericum stragulum, Coreopsis major, Linum virginianum, Helianthus divaricatus, Sericocarpus asteroides. Erect herb (sometimes sprawling); phyllaries with dark purplish-brown near tip; corollas pale purplish; infrequent along road but with many stems in the clusters.
