Rhizomatous and stoloniferous, aquatic herb 2.5 ft high. Scattered prickles on stems. petioles, veins on leaf undersides, and peduncles. Spathe deep reddish purple, spirally twisted. Spadix much shorter than spathe, dull reddish purple.
