Occasional in open areas growing among rocks; seeds collected. Plants 5-7(-10) cm tall, 4-5 cm in diameter, with 10-11 ribs. Areoles 0.8-10 mm apart, 0-1 central spine, 5-15 mm long; radial spines 13-15, white to dark purple. Fruits 12 mm in diameter, spiny, with white spines. 2-3 stems, spines pink. Flowers green with maroon midline, 2.5-3.5 cm long, 2 cm wide; ovary 1-1.5 cm long, light green with white spines, fragile; tepals yellowish-green, 1.5-2 cmlong, linear, 4-5 mm wide; filaments white, 10 mm long; anthers yellow, 1-2 mm long; style white, 13 mm long' stigma light green, 3.4 mm long; Associated species-Pinus arizonica, Pinus cembroides, Quercus gambelli, Arctostaphylos pungens, Phoradendron californicum, Opuntia phaeacantha, Yucca bacatta, Cylindropuntia spinosior, Cercocarpus montanus, Juniperus deppeana, Berberis sp, Echinocereus triglochidiatus, Opuntia macrorhiza, Mammillaria sp; Habitat-Woodland, forest and other wooded land - Mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland, Juniper-Pinyon Forest; Substrate-Granite, rhyolite, 33.789217 -105.703067, 2094m
