PLANT: Annual, 8-30 cm tall, simple to few branched; stem glabrous to slightly short pubescent below, glabrous above. LEAVES: glabrous to sparsely short pubescent, gradually reduced upwards, deeply lobed once or twice, the primary lobes linear, spreading. FLORESCENCE: INloosely clustered, with 2-7 subsessile flowers at distal branch tips. FLOWERS: calyx 3-5 mm long, glabrous, the lobes acute; corolla funnelform, 5-9 mm long, white to lavender, the tube 1-2 times the calyx, yellow, the throat yellow, with purple spots; stamens inserted on the upper tube; anthers included; stigma slightly above the anthers. CAPSULE: 4-6 mm long, ovoid. 2n=18. NOTES: Open sites, shrubland, woodland; Coconino, Mohave, San Juan, Yavapai, Yuma cos.; 450-1300 m (1600-4200 ft); Mar-Apr; CA to WY, s to AZ and NM.
