Leaves mostly reclining to prostrate; blades oblanceolate to spatulate, 4-10(-13) cm × (10-)15-30 mm, margins mostly toothed to lobed, lobes oblanceolate to spatulate, faces often densely villous. Phyllaries ovate to obovate, margins mostly densely tomentose, densely villous to tomentose (hairs translucent, mostly yellow), ± stipitate-glandular. Corollas surpassing phyllaries at flowering, 8-16 mm; anthers 3.5-4.5 mm. Cypselae ± dimorphic, whitish or purplish, ribs ridged to subalate, straight, often diminishing proximally, glabrous or scabrous. 2n = 36.
Flowering April-May (year-round). Coastal dunes and beach heads; 0-50 m; Calif.
Variety eastwoodiae occurs from Point Reyes north to about Point Arena.
