Stem 3-10 dm, glabrous below the infl (or puberulent in 2 lines); lvs glabrous, the principal cauline ones elliptic to oblong or lance-oblong, 8-12 נ2-4 cm, rounded at base, entire, the upper cauline ones evidently reduced and distant; infl 1-3 dm, slender, cylindric, often interrupted, with short branches; bracteal lvs small, lance-linear, callous-denticulate; cal sparsely glandular or subglabrous, 2.5-5 mm at anthesis; cor 1.5-2.5 cm, white, finely and densely glandular-puberulent all around both inside and out, the tube gradually dilated from base to top, the limb nearly regular, the throat not pleated; seeds 0.9-1.5 mm; 2n=32. Prairies and moist woods; Ind. to Wis. and Nebr., s. to Miss. and Tex.; intr. eastward, as from Me. to Pa. May, June.
