Slender, tufted, usually perennial, 2-10 dm, often finely pubescent below; lvs very slender, usually less than 2 mm wide, with strongly involute margins, the lower with short sheath and long blade (10-)15-45 cm, the upper with longer sheath and shorter blade; panicle slender, with few ascending branches; spikelets 3-4 mm; glumes spreading at maturity, the first narrow, usually less than 0.2 mm wide in side-view, the second much wider, 1.5-3.5 נ0.5-0.8 mm, truncate; first lemma oval, 1.8-3.2 mm, scaberulous distally, acute or short-awned, the second shorter, scaberulous, occasionally short-awned; anthers 1-2 mm; 2n=14. Sandy soil in pine woods; se. Va. to Fla., Tenn., and e. Tex.
