Stems 4-10 dm, usually simple, ±hirsute, chiefly on the sides but also on the angles, with pustulate, spreading hairs overlying a minute, stipitate-glandular puberulence; lvs lance-oblong or oblong-obovate, 6-14 cm, a third to half as wide, broadest near the middle, acute to acuminate, crenate, cordate at base, sparsely hirsute on both sides; petioles 1-5 cm; cal-tube 3-4.5 mm, the lobes half as long. Woods, chiefly in the mts.; Md. and Va. to Tenn.; also s. O. to s. Ill. June-Aug. (S. nuttallii; S. riddellii)
