Stems 5-8 dm, glabrous or the angles with a few stiff reflexed hairs less than 0.5 mm; lvs lance-ovate to narrowly oblong, 7-12 cm, a fourth to a third as wide, acute or usually acuminate, crenate-serrate, obtuse or rounded at base, glabrous or very sparsely hirsutulous on both sides; petiole 3-8 mm, smooth on the upper side; cal-tube 3.5-4.5 mm, the lobes pubescent, half as long. Rocky slopes in the mts.; Va., W.Va., and N.C. June, July.
