Erect, usually stout, 3-7 dm; lvs long-petioled, ovate to round- ovate, crenate (usually more than 12 teeth on each side), cordate at base; racemes 1 or more, to 1 dm, even the lowest bracts very different from the adjacent foliage lvs; cor (10)15-25 mm. Woods; Md. to n. O. and Minn., s. to S.C., Ala., and Mex., most abundant w. of the Appalachians. June, July. (S. cordifolia; S. versicolor) Three vars. with us.
