Stems 2-6 dm from a short, somewhat woody caudex, 4-angled, essentially glabrous; lvs erect or ascending, subsessile, ovate or lance-ovate, 1-2 cm, sometimes bristly above; hypanthium glabrous or nearly so, strongly constricted between the globose base and the short, abruptly flared neck, 5-7(-9) mm at maturity; sep triangular, ciliate, shortly awn- tipped; pet 10-20 mm, glabrous, ascending; anthers oblong, nearly straight, 1-2 mm, scarcely prolonged at the base; self-compatible, the other spp. all self-sterile and with widely spreading pet; 2n=22. Acid bogs on the coastal plain; se. Va. to Fla. and Tex. (R. ciliosa)
