Stem stout and erect, to 1 m, finely hairy; lvs sessile or subsessile, lance-oblong, 2-7 cm, 2-3 times as long as wide, with sharp subappressed teeth, broadly acute to rounded at base, thinly hairy on both sides; spikes usually several, 3-10 נ0.5-1 cm, sometimes interrupted at base; cal 1.5-2 mm, hairy throughout, the narrow lobes about as long as wide; 2n=24. Native of Eurasia, escaped from cult. into fields, roadsides, and waste places here and there in our range.
