Deep-rooted, 1-few-stemmed perennial to 6 dm, armed throughout with stiff hairs 3-6 mm, these least abundant on the lvs; lvs long- petioled, subrotund in outline, deeply 3-5-lobed and often again cleft; cymes few-fld; cal of staminate fls salverform, the limb 14-25 mm wide; stamens 10, unequal; fr prismatic; seeds subcylindric, 6-8 mm; 2n=36. Dry, sandy soil, chiefly on the coastal plain; se. Va. to Fla. and Tex. June, July. (Jatropha s.)
