Coarse shrub or small tree; lvs exstipulate, elliptic-obovate, 5-15 cm, tapering to a short petiole, veined as in nos. 2-4, [Viburnum rafinesquianum Schult.; Viburnum molle Michx.; & Viburnum dentatum L.] toothed; infl rounded, oppositely branched, the branches becoming bright red in autumn; frs at first pink, becoming blue-black; 2n=16, 32. Spring. Native of Japan, rarely escaped in our range.
