Perennial, glabrous or glandular-pubescent above; stems ascending, or creeping at base, 1-3 dm; lvs glandular-punctate, sessile by a broad base, lanceolate to ovate, 1-2.5 cm, entire or barely denticulate; pedicels filiform, 5-15 mm; bractlets 2, sep-like; sep lanceolate, 4-5 mm; cor bright yellow (white), 12-16 mm; fr globose, 2-3 mm, slightly shorter than the cal; 2n=28. Muddy or sandy shores, especially in acid soils; Nf. and Que., s. along the coast to Fla., inland irregularly to Ill. and N.D. Summer and fall. (? G. lutea Raf.)
