Leaf blades: margins with rounded teeth, apex obtuse. Leaflike bracts absent, at least in terminal ¹/2 of inflorescence. Vertical seeds 0.6-0.9 mm diam.

Fruiting late summer-fall. Waste places, especially ± brackish soils; 0-300 m; N.B., N.S., Ont., P.E.I., Que.; Conn., Del., Fla., Ill., Ind., Ky., Maine, Md., Mass., Mich., Minn., Mo., N.H., N.J., N.Y., Ohio, Pa., R.I., Vt., Va., W.Va., Wis.; Europe; Asia.

The original occurrence of this species in America is not established as certain. Aellen, however, suggests that it is indigenous in salty places in Saskatchewan and Colorado.
