Rosettes 3.5-5.5 × 4-6.5 dm. Leaves 25-42(-47) cm × 6.5-11 cm; blade ovate. Flowers 4.3-5.5(-6) cm; perianth tube 6-9 mm, limb lobes 13-21 mm; filaments 3.3-4.4 mm; ovary 2-3.4 cm. 2n = 120.
Flowering late spring--early summer. Gravelly places in grasslands, chaparral, pinyon-juniper, and oak woodlands; 1100--2100 m; Ariz.
Variety couesii hybridizes with A. chrysantha in Arizona.
