Tep distinct, subequal, widely spreading; filaments distinct, inserted on the base of the tep; style clavate, 3-cleft; capsule oblong to pyriform, 3-lobed, its 3 valves recurving sharply at maturity and soon deciduous, exposing the mass of round, black, fleshy seeds attached to the central axis, the whole resembling a large blackberry; perennial herbs with horizontal rhizomes and ensiform lvs; infl widely branched, cymose-paniculate. 2, e. Asia.
