Spreading or prostrate, rhizomatous perennial to 4 dm; pubescence of the upper parts, including the pedicels, cal and both sides of the lvs, cinereous, composed of minute, stellate or branching hairs; lvs ovate to elliptic, 3-10 cm, commonly obtuse, entire, rounded to obtuse or abruptly short-cuneate at base; petioles wingless; cal-lobes deltoid, little longer than wide; cor 11-17 mm; anthers 2-3 mm, equaling or shorter than the filaments; fruiting cal ovoid, 2-3 cm; 2n=24. Sandy soil along the coast, from se. Va. to the Gulf of Mexico. May, June. (P. viscosa var. maritima)
