Erect or prostrate, 2-5 dm; lvs silvery-scurfy, broadly oblong to obovate, entire or nearly so, 1-3 cm, tapering to the base; staminate spikes slender, 1-2 cm; pistillate fls in small, axillary glomerules, or intermingled with the lower staminate ones; fruiting bracteoles cuneate-rotund, 4-6 mm, somewhat wider, with 4-7 triangular teeth along the rounded summit, crested on each side of the center near the base with 2-4 projections to 2.5 mm; radicle superior; 2n=18. Sandy seashores; N.H. to Fla. and Tex. Perhaps better treated as a var. of the more tropical A. pentandra (Jacq.) Standl., but the proper nomenclatural combination not yet made.
