Much like no. 7 [Cornus racemosa Lam.]; shrub 1-3 m; twigs maroon-brown or maroon-black, becoming gray or gray-brown; old bark fissured; lvs green on both sides, scarcely paler beneath; infl flat-topped to more often convex; fr pale blue (white). Swamps and river-banks, in our range confined to the coastal plain; s. Del. to Fla. and Tex., and n. inland to Tenn., s. Ind., s. Ill., se. Mo., Ark., and s. Okla. May, June. (?
