Hirsute perennial; stem 2-4 dm, not much branched; lvs ovate or lance- ovate, sessile by a broad base, 1-2 cm, entire or with a few low teeth; fls sessile or on pedicels to 5 mm, or to 9 mm in fr; bractlets lance-linear, 9 mm; sep lance-linear, the outer 7 mm, the inner 4 mm; cor white, 1 cm; fr conic, 4-5 mm; 2n=22. Pine-barrens, chiefly on the coastal plain; Va. to Fla. and Tex.; also inland from N.C. to Ky. and Ark. Summer and fall. (Sophronanthe p.; Tragiola p.) Sometimes excluded from Gratiola because of its simple anther-connective and longitudinal pollen-sacs.
