Much like no 15 [Astragalus agrestis Douglas], but with pick-shaped (malpighian) hairs, sometimes more densely pubescent, and with the stems arising from a surficial crown or caudex surmounting the taproot; stipules soon becoming pale and scarious; fls purple to ochroleucous, 12-20 mm; fr densely strigulose; 2n=32. Prairies, plains, and foothills, often in rocky or gravelly places; Minn., w. Ont., and n. Io. to N.M., Oreg., and Alas., and widespread in Asia. June. Ours is var. robustior Hook. (A. chandonnettii; A. striatus)
