Perennial, villous in the infl, otherwise glabrous; stems 2-6 dm, simple or branched; lvs linear or lance-linear, 3-10 cm, entire; spike compact or interrupted at the base, later elongating; bracts pale yellow to nearly white or tinged with purple, oblong to narrowly elliptic, about equaling the fls, entire or with a few teeth at the rounded tip; cal 15-20 mm, the lateral halves separate to near the middle, each half ending in 2 blunt lobes 2-3 mm; galea barely surpassing the cal, the very short, appressed lower cor-lip included; 2n=24. Damp rocky soil; Lab. and Nf. to Vt.; Keweenaw Point, Mich. July, Aug. (C. acuminata; C. pallida var. s.)
