Stems 2-5 dm; lvs only 2 or 3 pairs, usually closely approximate and appearing whorled at the base of the infl (or the pairs seldom separated by as much as 4 cm), ovate to oblong-obovate, short-acuminate, hairy along the veins above and beneath, ciliate-margined, on petioles 1.5-4 cm; infl usually with a single elongate axis, the fls in the lower and middle part mostly 3-6 at a node, not bracteate; cal 4-6 mm at anthesis, nearly regular, the lanceolate lobes twice as long as the tube, in fr 2-lipped, 12-15 mm, hirsute within; cor 15-20 mm, the lower lobe about as wide as long; stamens 4. Low woods; s. Va. to Ga. and Ala.; disjunct in s. O. May-July. (Micheliella v.)
