Plants erect, not mound-forming, 0.5-5 m; bark on older stems gray, shredded . Leaves: petiole 1-3 mm; blade orbiculate to orbiculate-ovate, 1-2.2 × 0.8-1.8 cm, base truncate to ± lobed. 2n = 26.

Subspecies nummularia is known from northern Sonoma County to Mendocino County.
