Plants, erect, 1-2 m; burl present . Leaf blades gray-glaucous, dull. 2n = 26, 52.

Flowering winter-early spring. Chaparral on desert edges; 1300-1600 m; Calif.

Subspecies desertica is found in the Santa Rosa Mountains and inner Peninsular Range of Riverside and San Diego counties.
