Lvs erect, 8-25 cm, covered with long, purple, glandular hairs, the blade not differentiated from the petiole; stipules adnate, fimbriate on the margins, forming matted brown wool at the base of the lvs; scape 6-22 cm, with 4-16 fls 1 cm wide; sep glandular hairy, 4-7 mm; pet purple, broadly ovate, erose at the tip; seeds black, 0.5-0.8 mm, ellipsoid, abruptly constricted near the ends, coarsely crateriform-pitted, the pits in 16-20 rows; 2n=20. Along the coast; Mass. and R.I. to Del.; S.C. to Fla. and La. July-Sept.
