Plants 5-13 dm, thinly tomentose. Leaves: basal leaf blade (3-)8-20 × 0.3-1 cm, tomentose abaxially, glabrous adaxially. Peduncles 1-3 cm. Involucres turbinate, 6-7 × 3-5 mm. Flowers 8-15 mm, including 2-4(-7) mm stipelike base. Achenes 5-6 mm.

Flowering Mar-Sep. Sandy flats and slopes, scrub oak and conifer woodlands; 10-50 m; Fla.

Variety gnaphalifolium is federally listed as threatened and is known only from DeSoto, Highlands, Lake, Marion, Orange, Polk, Putnam, Sumter, and Volusia counties in central Florida.
