Herbs, prostrate mats, 0.7-2 × 1-3 dm. Aerial flowering stems erect or nearly so, 0.5-1.5 dm, floccose, without one or more leaflike bracts ca. midlength. Leaves in rather compact rosettes; blade broadly elliptic, 0.5-1(-1.5) × 0.5-1 cm, densely white-tomentose on both surfaces or slightly less so adaxially. Inflorescences umbellate; branches (2-)2.5-5 cm, floccose, without a whorl of bracts ca. midlength; involucral tubes 1.5-2 mm, lobes 1.5-3 mm. Flowers 3-6 mm; perianth bright yellow. Variety humistratum is restricted to exposed serpentine in four areas in Siskiyou and Trinity counties of northern California: White Mountain, Mt. Eddy-Scott Mountain, the Marble Mountains, and Mt. Shasta.
