Much like no. 1 [Crotonopsis elliptica Willd.]; lvs linear to lance-linear, 1.5-4 cm, the stellate hairs of the upper surface small, with non-overlapping arms to 0.3 mm; spikes slender, 1-2 cm, with 3-6 pistillate fls; fr not veined, its lepidote hairs with a minute central axis and conspicuous radiating, often ascending arms. Dry sand or sandy soil on the coastal plain; S.C. to Fla. and Tex., n. in the interior to s. Ill. and se. Mo., and disjunct in e. Io. and nw. Ill. Late summer.
