Stems clustered on a stout taproot and caudex, 2-6 dm, strigillose; lfls 15-31, narrow, 1-3.5 cm, strigillose beneath; racemes 5-10 cm, long-peduncled, with 20-70 nodding, ochroleucous fls 15-20 mm; cal-tube 5-6 mm, the subulate lobes 1.5-3 mm; fr drooping, linear-oblong, 2-3 cm, glabrous, triquetrous, the upper suture acute, the lower side flattened or broadly sulcate; stipe 3.5-7 mm; 2n=24. Badlands and gullies, often in seleniferous soil; Sask., N.D., and S.D. to Utah and n. Mex., and reported from w. Minn. May, June. Ours is var. racemosus. (Tium r.)
