Plants 30-70 cm. Leaves opposite; petioles 0-2 mm; blades 1- or, obscurely, 3-nerved from bases, narrowly oblong to linear, 5-40 × 1-3.5 mm, margins entire. Heads in paniculiform or corymbiform arrays. Peduncles 5-60 mm. Involucres 7-11 mm. Phyllaries green to stramineous, sometimes purple-tinged. Florets 9-13; corollas pale yellow to maroon, 6-6.5 mm. Cypselae 3.5-5 mm.

Flowering Jun-Sep. Piney woods; of conservation concern; 10-50+ m; Fla.

Variety floridana is known only from southern Florida.
