The Texas State University Herbarium (SWT) was formally established in 1984 and primarily serves the teaching and research needs of members of the Department of Biology at Texas State University. The herbarium, which emphasizes Texas material, has notable strengths in the floras of central Texas and of the Texas State University System’s Christmas Mountains property in west Texas. It is based largely on faculty, staff, and student collections. Through exchange, many duplicates of notable Texas collectors, such as B. C. Tharp, B. H. Warnock, M. C. Johnston, S. & G. Jones, W. Carr, etc., have been acquired. As of 2025, the collection exceeds 20,000 specimens.
