Restoration wetlands 0.5 mi E of Everglades National Park. Growing in 5 to 10 cm of surface water, first observed in Sept. in deeper water. Herbaceous perennial grass with upright leaf blades extending erect and beyond waist high, leaves from creeping stolons; stolons thicker than 2mm and spongy under shallow water, stolons extending to 4m with little lateral branching. Male panicles spreading, females contracted and barely exserted from inflated sheath; female inflorescence with a mean 23 recurved branches and mean 296 achenes; achenes quick to shed; lemmas and paleas disintegrating between veins, veins antrorsely barbed and acting as bristles do in dispersal.
